Food means different things to a lot of people. To some, food is what you eat to give your body energy to be able to function while to others, food is a language that not only speaks to their taste buds but their entire being.
To us, food whispers into our souls and alters our moods and views on the world. Food has been a trusted friend, a worthy ally and a healer. On this blog, we will walk you through our relationship with food.
This week has been hard. We both had a rollercoaster of a week where we felt our emotional energies were zapped and we were starting to feel distant with each other. Life/adulting was happening to us in real time and at breakneck speeds. Unfortunately, there was no manual we could skim through to help us out of the rut we were in.
As we tried to work out what we were going through, we stumbled upon a John Gunther quote — “all happiness depends on a leisurely breakfast.” Being the foodies that we are, we decided to test out his theory. At best, we would get a solution to what we’ve been going through. At worst, we would have a full stomach. A win-win situation, right?
Our exploits led us to Java House at Adams Arcade in Nairobi. It is a nice quiet spot with low foot traffic and great music. We decided to try out the Full Java Breakfast which consists of: two eggs with toast, home fries, baked beans, bacon or sausage and coffee, tea or juice at a cost of Ksh 830.
The Full Java Breakfast was a bit hit and miss for us. From a food perspective, the variety and quantity of food was not as much as we hoped. For the cost, we felt they could add on sausage or 2. The plating/presentation also wasn’t something you would write home about. The food did taste good though and what stole the day for us was the ambience as well as the customer service that we received.
Overall, we enjoyed ourselves at Java and the change in environment helped lift our moods. We spoke a lot about the interior design and décor at Java which is well thought out and brilliantly done. We will be borrowing some ideas and implementing them in our home.
As for whether food in general can help heal the soul…. the Full Java Breakfast gave us a much needed lift so maybe just maybe. Let us see how this new week plays out.
